A few days ago I got a call out of the blue from a talent agent who was looking for a Bmxer to participate in something called the 'Model Challenge' for Style.com which is Vogue Magazine's online home. Basically its an online video series in which models challenge athletes at their sport. In the first episode a skateboarding model challenges a NYC bike messenger to a race in NYC. In that episode, somehow the model on a skateboard ends up beating the bike messenger. The videos are geared to entertain an audience that is into high fashion and highlight the models and their courageous sides more than the authenticity of the sports. So I say OK, why not, it could be funny, I call up Ryan Hoey to come along and take some pics and to witness this ridiculousness. All photos by Ryan Hoey.com. Originally this was supposed to be an outdoor race but with a terrible storm hitting the Northeast that wasn't gonna happen and so arrangements were made to do it indoors at a skatepark close to NYC. They asked me whether we should do it at the Incline club or at Sheilds. I thought a minute, Incline or Sheilds?, Incline or Sheilds?,... and I realized that there was a good chance that Scotty Cranmer or other riders I know could be at Incline and I'd have to explain to them what in the world I was doing racing around the skatepark with a model....Sheilds skatepark it was. So early the next morning me and Ryan were up and out battling rain and the worst traffic ever on the LIE. What was supposed to be an hour and forty-five minute drive took over 3 hours. We finally got to the skatepark and all the electricity was out in the whole town from a transformer that blew up. Just my luck, after about an hour the lights flickered on and everyone was stoked, about a minute later the model arrived, Caroline Winberg, a Swedish Supermodel. Everyone was really stoked now!! She was on a tight schedule so we were mic'd up quickly and got started on the 'race'. We worked out a route through the park did some pre-race interviews. I'm not going to give away all the details of the race right now, you'll have to wait to see it when its online in a couple weeks, but I will tell you that she raced dirty and kicked me straight off the starting line. Other than that she was super cool and fun to hang out with. The people from Vogue and the production crew were all super cool too. Basically we got to decide what we wanted to do and say which was pretty cool. What do you say when someone asks you what titles you've won? Long Island Trail Champion? I'm sure when this video hits the Internet there will be 1,000,001 Anony comments having a feild day hating on this. But I don't care, all I gotta say is...after 20 years riding Bmx with little boys, on this day I got paid to ride with a SuperModel. Try hating on that Anonymous!

wow, this is really amazing that a no name person in the industry was able to accomplish something so great. This might be the downfall of bmx. You dont have to do flat 3s or jump NO-HOMO, just ride bikes with supermodels and you get respect and recognition these days.
On a more serious note, Supes, idk how you pulled this off but it seems awesome. Funny you didnt want to go to Incline club cause you knew ud get made fun of by Scotty and his bros for not being able to air of quarters, but its all good. Any chance u get to receive a quick rub and tug from that fine young broad? Good shit. maybe one day ill be able to achieve true fame like you.
psyche!
